GIFMIS Training Workshop at Foso College of Education

A training on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information system (GIFMIS) was organized by officials from the GIFMIS Secretariat from 3rd – 8th October 2022 for selected staff of the College. 

The trainer, Mr. Stephen Duah explained that GIFMIS is part of the broader PFM reforms programme and that the system is deployed for the management of public funds across Covered Entities in Ghana. He continued that the aim of the System is to establish an integrated ICT-based PFM information systems in Ghana at the Treasuries, MDAs and MMDAs located at the National, Regional and District levels.

Some of the uses of GIFMIS include:

  • Manage commitment made against appropriation
  • Process payment and claims
  • Record revenue and expenditure transactions
  • Produce Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Financial Reports.

Some benefits of the System include:

  • Addressing lack of integration between budget preparation and execution systems.
  • Addressing inadequate budgetary controls.

The training session was fully participated by key staff of the College, which included the Principal, Finance Unit, Audit Unit, Procurement Unit, Stores and IT Unit.

End Of Second Semester Examination Ends

The second semester examination for First and Second year students ended on Friday July 26, 2019. For the first time, the mentoring institution, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast did not assign external supervisors to the College. The end of semester examination was conducted solely by the College.

Understanding that the College does not need the presence of an external supervisor to conduct a credible examination, the supervisor, assistant supervisors and Invigilators worked to maintain the high standard the college have set for itself.

The College management and staff wish all 789 First and Second Year Students safe journey back home as they go down.

The examinations were generally free of negative incidences. Three students reported sick in the course of the examination. Their conditions were not serious to demand that they are sent to the hospital for medical treatment. They were advised to seek professional medical treatments after the papers. No one reported to the examination after a paper had commence. Also, candidates did not misbehave in a manner that dented the smooth conduct of the examination.

However, the College encountered one key challenge. The college had to borrow materials from Obiri-Yeboah Senior High School to enable candidates write Physics I practical. The College’s Physics materials (Load, springs and retort stands) were insufficient. The lesson from this is that the College must step up its efforts at equipping science laboratories to attain a hassle-free organization of science practical examinations.

The College management and staff wish all 789 First and Second Year Students safe journey back home as they go down.

NTS To Guide Teacher Training And Practice Launched

The National Teachers’ Standards (NTS) which will guide teacher training and practice in the country was launched at the Accra College of Education today to help give school children in the country the best possible education for a brighter future.

She said about 68, 000 copies of the NTS have been printed for distribution to all students and tutors of the 46 public Colleges of Education, newly qualified teachers and Universities which engage in initial teacher training.

The NTS was developed by the National Teaching Council (NTC) with support from UK aid through the Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T- TEL) program and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Evelyn Owusu Oduro, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Teaching Council described the role of teachers in training students to realise their potentials in life as very critical.

In this regard, she said teachers must be highly skilled, prepared and motivated to meet the highest possible standards to excel in the classroom.

Dr Every Owusu Oduro said the NTS will help teachers measure themselves against global standards of excellence in Teaching.

In developing the standards, she said apart from the National Teaching Council (NTC), key stakeholders such as the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), National Accreditation Board (NAB ), Ghana Education Service (GES ), National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), National Inspectorate Board (NIB), Principals of Colleges of Education, Teacher Unions, Teacher Education Universities and JICA were involved.

The Principal of Accra College of Education Dr Samuel Atintono said the launch/handing over of the copies of the NTS to the Colleges of Education constitutes a major step by government and its development partners in education such as T-TEL to transform Teacher education in the country to meet modern standards.

Dr Atintono also commended government for its efforts to develop policy guidelines as well as provide support aimed at making the teaching profession a true profession.

Prof Jonathan Fletcher Dean of the School of Education and Leadership University of Ghana Legon described the development of the NTS as a milestone in efforts to promote education in the country .

1986 Post-Middle Year Group Donates Furniture To FOSCO

TThirty-three years after completing their Teacher Education Programme at Foso College of Education, the 1986 Post-Middle (PM) group returned to College to visit and give back to their alma mater. In a brief hilarious but emotional ceremony to welcome the group and receive the donation, the principal of the College, Dr. Anthony Baabereyir, was full of joy for the group’s visit. He was also full of joy that a year group on their own have sown a seed which he believes will grow to become a mighty three. Receiving the set of furniture, the Principal promised that the College will take good care of the furniture.

The group was grateful to the College for transforming them into responsible citizen. They took the visit as an opportunity to encourage the continuing students to pursue their dreams with hard-work and determination

Moments before the presentation, the spokesperson of the group gave a narration of how they were admitted and transformed by the college. He said while the entry requirement for the three-year Post-secondary Group was GCE O’Level, the entry requirement for the Four-Year Post-Middle Group was Middle School Certificate Examination. The group was grateful to the College for transforming them into responsible citizen. They took the visit as an opportunity to encourage the continuing students to pursue their dreams with hard-work and determination
